Underpaid Dancer

It all started when…
I discovered that i was just never going to be cut out for the traditional 9 - 5, corporate culture. The thought of sitting behind a desk and counting the seconds before my next break was just so soul-crushing that I knew I could never rely on that type of job to supplement my tiny dance teacher income.
For almost 3 decades, I have been making cards, invitations, party favours and gifts for friends and family on their extra special days and so often I would hear “This is amazing! You should sell these”! and, for almost 3 decades I’ve laughed and waved my hand saying back “it’s a labour of Love. I could never make a living off of it”.
Enter 2020 and Covid lockdowns that kept me out of the studios and safely tucked away at home. Like everyone else, i had hoped Lockdown wouldn’t last more than a few months, but as case numbers grew, the possibility of my return to work became increasingly dim and I was forced to re-think my whole life and income possibilities.
The idea of making my cards and party favours for a living seemed like a pipe dream for so many years that it was difficult to decide to take the leap. But, with each passing day the thought of just “going for it” became a little less intimidating until one day I was ready to take the plunge!
Let me help you make a special day extra special with custom, handmade goodies that will make everyone smile! If you have an inside joke, unusual theme or colour scheme that you want represented, I will try to make that happen for you! The sky’s the limit! drop me an email or text and let’s come up with some fun ideas! Have a look at the gallery below to see some of the projects I have made over the years (sorry about the quality of the photos. These were taken purely for my own archival purposes so I could remember what I made. These photos were never meant to be shared. Eek!). I hope you enjoy browsing through these photos as much as I had making each project!

Kelly's 60th!
Made this banner set for a student who had a very big birthday a few years ago. This was her surprise when she walked into the studio for class.

Destination Wedding!
This is the outside of some wedding invitations I made as a wedding gift for a friend who was having a destination wedding in Mexico!

Wedding Placecards
These were table placecards that I made for my friend’s destination wedding in Mexico (these are actually mock ups that I made because she wanted to assemble the real ones once she arrived in Mexico).

Waste not, want not!
Here I reused a Purdy’s Chocolate bag (because it was the perfect size and shape for the gift I was giving and I was too cheap to go out buy a new one) and covered up the logo with some Christmas stockings I made out of small bits of paper I didn’t want to throw out from a previous project.

Baby Mobile
This is a sheep themed mobile I made for a co-worker who was having her first baby. It was my first large mobile but it turned out quite well (looked better in real life than in this photo). Sorry for the quality of the photo but I only took this for archival purposes for myself. Never did I ever expect I would share this photo with anyone else! Thank heavens I’m not a photographer!

Wrapping
My other passion is wrapping gifts that I give in crazy ways! This is the wrap job on the sheep mobile I gave a co-worker as a shower gift. I had fun with gift! The sheep in the middle is actually the card / gift tag as well as the centerpiece to this meadow of ribbon. Again, it looked better in real life. You had to be there . . .

Repurposing old cards
I love getting beautiful cards as much as I love sending them and when I get a really nice one, I can’t just throw it away. I always try to save some part of it and bring it back to life in a whole in way in a new card I make. This is one of those cards! I cut out the ornament from the previous card, found matching card stock and put together this fun little card!

Custom shirts
I designed these shirts and signs for a couple of friends/co-workers who had had some terrible health scares during the previous year’s dance shows at the dance school we worked at. I made these shirts and “help signs” as a gag and a genuine aid for that year’s shows. Thankfully, they are both alive and ALMOST well!

You’re seeing it correctly, I didn’t mess up the orientation of the this photo. It’s my attempt at humour on this Halloween card.

Dabbling in Photography
This is a photo of my cat Chloe that I thought would be perfect for a Christmas card. It’s one of my very rare attempts at photography that actually worked out.

Sorry this is so blurry but i usually take these photos for purely archival purposes for my own records so I remember what I’ve done from year to year but I never expect to share these photos with anyone. Again, I’m not a photographer!!

Jack and Jill Banner
This is a banner I made for a co-worker’s Jack and Jill that was held at work. They didn’t put it up the way I had intended it so it looks totally off balance and asymmetrical (aaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!) but you get the idea of what it’s supposed to say right?

Another close up of some parts of the banner I made. She’s a dance teacher and he is a baseball freak!

Jack and Jill Banner
These are the heart confetti I made to toss on the floor and wherever there was a bald spot in the decor. Different sizes for different purposes.

Magnets
These are glass magnets I made for my students as Christmas gifts. Had to ask each student what their favourite colour was and tried to make magnets in those colours. it was a lot of work but it was fun see them all together like this.

EOS Lip Balm Card
I have a friend who is OBSESSED with EOS Lip Balm so I decided to have some fun with the presentation of my Easter gift to her!

Name Tags
Because each of my students have allergies and dietary restrictions, I have to make sure I don’t give the wrong Halloween goody bag to the wrong person, These bags have been adorned with gift tags that have been cut to spell each student’s name.

Cake Banners and Toppers
I made this for a friend who loves giraffes for a vegan cake that refused to come out of the box it came in. Had to improvise and make this presentation look good even though it was stuck in a brown box. Put grass all around the bottom and had fun with the top!

Custom Masks
These are panels from masks I made for my students as Christmas gifts. It was a 2 sided, reversible mask that had my studio’s logo one side and a cute print on the other.

I built a house!!
One of my cats loves to hid in big boxes so when I got a good strong one at Christmas I decided to built him his own house! It’s currently all dressed up for Christmas but I will be adding other more seasonal motifs as the seasons change! It’s a little off in many places because I was making it up as I went - no plan at all! Truly free-flowing creative energy on this one. I will actually take measurements on the next one - I promise!

On the inside was a picture of a roll of toilet paper. I somehow forgot to get a photo of the inside so you’ll just have to take my word for it - it was hilarious!!
